Day 7 – 14 days to be a better Shooter – Type 1, 2 & 3 Malfs gives you the opportunity to keep the skills you learned on Days 4, 5 and 6 polished off.

Type 1 Malfunction

Remember Day 4 was Type 1 Malfunctions.  This is when we get a “click” instead of a bang after we pull the trigger.  When this happens we immediately bring the handgun back to our workspace (near the side of our head), we attack the magazine (hit it with the heel of our hand) and attack the slide (overhand, but not covering the ejection port).  Remember to have the firearm at a 45 degree angle or so, so that the ejection port is pointing down.  This allows gravity to aid in getting whatever may be in the ejection port out of there.

Do this 20 times.

Type 2 Malfunction

Type 2 is when we have an expended shell (a piece of brass) sticking out of the ejection port.  When we find one of these malfunctions, we do exactly the same thing as a Type 1 Malfunction:

We immediately bring the handgun back to our workspace (near the side of our head), we attack the magazine (hit it with the heel of our hand) and attack the slide (overhand, but not covering the ejection port).  Remember to have the firearm at a 45 degree angle or so, so that the ejection port is pointing down.  This allows gravity to aid in getting whatever may be in the ejection port out of there.

Do this 20 times.

Type 3 Malfunction

When we pull the trigger and nothing happens, we will immediately go into a Type 1/Type 2 malfunction clearance drill (they are the exact same drill) which is to ‘attack the magazine and attack the slide’. We will either recognize the slide/bolt didn’t go all the way forward or we won’t.  Not to worry if we don’t because we will attempt to fire, but nothing will happen. If we noticed the bolt/slide didn’t go forward we will automatically be at this point, if we didn’t and attacked the slide/bolt and nothing happened you are now at this point – which is you will now go through your UNLOAD sequence (you will have to RIP the magazine from the magazine well and put it in your firing hand pinky) – and then we will go through your LOAD sequence – grab magazine, insert it – “ATTACK THE MAG” and then rack the bolt/charging handle “ATTACK THE SLIDE”. This would be followed by attempting to fire if the situation still calls for that.

Do this 20 times.
